A new engagement – Alex and Steve

Where did it start?

Steve and I met in high school. The moment I saw him I had the BIGGEST crush on him. However, at the time he was a coach at my high school. I know what you are thinking, but for quite some time it was just a dream of mine. A long four years later, after I graduated we went on our first date. We aren’t really sure as to when we officially started dating and stopped being friends but somewhere along the line we decided we liked each other. 🙂858652_4893224203374_1720022547_o

How long have you been together?

We have known each other for 9 years now but have been dating for 5ish years now (remember, there was no official date that we started dating).

The proposal:

Steve and I are very non-traditional. We had been talking about it for a while and I was looking at rings I liked. I finally found a ring that I just couldn’t pass up. So we were sitting around and he looked at me and said “Let’s do it”. I know, I know…it’s not some crazy story with hot air balloons and rose petals but it was perfect. It was low key, personal and very him. I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Insure your wedding? Say what?

Did you know that you can and should insure your wedding? It was a shock to me too! However, after doing some research, why wouldn’t you? I mean, you are spending just as much, if not more on your wedding day as you would a car and you definitely would insure that! But what does wedding insurance mean? What exactly would you need it for, you ask? Well, let me tell you!

There are two types of insurance, the first is Cancellation insurance.

1. You have to postpone your weddingurl-2

Say two feet of snow falls, I know in Colorado nothing stops for snow, but lets just say it did and your guests couldn’t make it to the wedding. Well, you’ve rented a facility, payed the deposit and hopefully paid the base facility fee by now and Colorado just wasn’t on your side. Insurance is going to cover this for you! Whew…that was a close call.

2. You have to cancel all together

Face it, life happens. We don’t want to think about it and will never expect anything to happen, but life has its ways of surprising you. So you broke up, do you just throw yourself a party or do you get insurance that is going to cover the deposits you lost for the band, flowers, cake, food and photos? Sounds like a no brainer to me!

The next insurance is one that I recommend that everyone at least look into: Liability Insurance.

1. Someone ruined your wedding dress!url-1

Aunt Susie had a little too much wine and went to hug you with a full glass…oops. Now you have to get it cleaned but the underskirt didn’t make it and some of the stains didn’t come out. Well, that’s what insurance is for!

2. There were damages to the venue.

You seriously love your sister and all her kids but sometimes don’t you wish she would actually watch them? The kids wandered off and started doing kid things like pulling all the flowers out of the flower beds, and throwing rocks at the nearby fence and digging in the grass. Now, the venue is going to stick you with a bill to fix those damages! Argh…Or…you have liability insurance and it will all be covered.

3.  The wedding gifts were stolen – what?!

I can’t even imagine this happening but I suppose it does. Say you don’t book at The Gatehouse at The Lionsgate Center where we can lock those gifts up so you don’t have to worry about them, and someone walks away with half your presents. They even took the new kitchen aid that you REALLY wanted! Luckily, you got that insurance and they are going to help you out.lifestyle-boutique-wedding-thief-small-55916

Ok, now that you have thought about all the bad things that COULD go wrong on your big day, lets get back to thinking about pink flowers and gorgeous wedding photos!

Upcoming wedding at The Lionsgate Center: Rachelle & Nick

Introducing the lovely couple: Rachelle & NickIMG_0435c (1)

Rachelle and Nick will make it official on April 27th, 2013.

Where did it start?

Nick and I met at a church event when we were in high school and became good friends. We attended the same university for a semester before he left to serve an LDS mission in Paraguay. When he came home, we spent a lot of time together and started dating!

How long have you been together?

We’ve know each other since the summer of 2007, so about 6 years. We have been dating for 8 months.

The proposal:

Nick’s proposal was very sweet. Our first day back from college for Thanksgiving break, we went to the Boulder Dinner Theatre with his mom and sister. I had no idea that my parents, his dad, brother, and cousin were all in the lobby as well. We ate our meal and 5 minutes before the show started, I decided to use the restroom really quick, which unfortunately is connected to the lobby! Luckily, I didn’t see my family and Nick was able to get them out before I came back! I thought the show was starting when one of the actors got on stage as asked Nick to come up. His sister looked at me to see my reaction, but I still had no idea! I quickly realized what was going on when he got up and asked me to go with him. Everyone was “awwwwing,” Nick proposed, and I said yes!  I was so nervous that I gave him my right hand when he went to put the ring on! I’m glad that both of our families got to be there; it was a perfect night!

Why the Gatehouse?

I have attended a few weddings that were held at the Lionsgate Center and loved its charm! We picked the Gatehouse because I love the “ball room” layout, especially since we hope to have lots of dancing at our reception. I have also heard great things about the staff! We wanted a place that would look beautiful but also provide a stress-free day and the Gatehouse has that :).

Upcoming Colorado Wedding at The Lionsgate Center: Duane & Lindsey

Introducing the beautiful Lindsey and Duane

hake_ottema_high-0019 hake_ottema_high-0025

Lindsey and Duane will be tying the knot on June 28th 2013!

Where did it all begin?

“Duane and I met at the hospital that we both currently work at.  I was starting my senior practicum of nursing school in the ICU.  I met Duane my first night while waiting for an open heart patient to return from the operating room.  A group of us were talking about scuba diving while we waited; a hobby Duane and I both have in common.  My preceptor at the time told Duane that when you dive you get to meet pretty girls.  Her sly way of trying to initiate something between the two of us.  Duane and I started of meeting and exchanging small talk that first night.  Following that he seemed to avoid me like the plague.  I had heard from fellow co-workers he wanted to ask me out but never did.  He was being a gentleman and wanted to respect that I was there to learn not to date.  A couple weeks later I finally took it upon myself to call Duane while at work to give him my number since he had yet to ask for it.  A move that embarrassed him and as I am told made him turn bright red in one of his patients rooms.  That night Duane made his way to see me and officially asked for my number.  We went on a few lunch dates following that and then eventually had our official first date.  One that I couldn’t have imagined to go better:  Catch in the park, Cold Stone ice cream, Wii bowling, sushi dinner, and dancing.  A perfect beginning to our story.”

Time well spent

“We have known each other for just under 2 years (about a year and 8 months).  We have been dating for just over a year and a half. ”

Tell us how he proposed!

“We were spending the weekend in Newcastle, Wyoming at his parent’s house.  Duane had planned to take me to Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota to see the waterfalls even though I was feeling sick.  The first stop was Roughlock Falls.  While walking down the trail we actually came across a small wedding ceremony; a site that was fitting considering the events that were to follow.  We continued along the trail to the bottom of the falls.  While enjoying the beautiful site Duane surprised me by getting down on one knee and asking me to marry him.  My was response was “Are you serious?”To which Duane replied “I’m on one knee with a ring… I am pretty serious.”  The obvioius answer was yes.  We celebrated alone for a few moments in front of the falls then made our way back up the trail.  The rest of the day was spent enjoying lunch and site seeing in Spearfish and then making our was back to Newcastle to share the news with family and friends.”

Why did you decide on the Dove House?

“When trying to find a venue we wanted to pick a place that took a lot of the pressure off of us as far as planning and finding vendors.  Lionsgate has definitely accomplished that for us thus far.  The planning process has been really enjoyable and stress free.  We chose the Dove House specifically because we loved the unique, vintage feel of the layout; an area that is cozy yet accommodates a large group of people.  We did not want the typical ballroom type reception.  We are also big dancers and having a designated dance area was definitely a plus for us.  Having a space that also offers and outdoor ceremony site and indoor reception in one location was a plus with all the out of town guests that will be coming.  I am incredibly excited for the big day and can’t wait to see how everything turns out.”

Upcoming wedding at the Lionsgate Center: Shauna and Brian

Introducing the beautiful Shauna and BrianJS_ShaunaBrian (1 of 1)-8

Shauna and Brian are making it official on June 21st at the beautiful outdoor wedding center – The Lionsgate Center, Gatehouse.

Shauna and Brian are meant to be! A classic friendship that turned into more.

Tell us how it began…

Brian and I met when we both worked for a non-profit organization called Imagine! Colorado. Together, we worked as therapeutic instructors for adults and children who have been diagnosed with developmentally disabilities. Brian and I grew closer as friends and started dating. Although we have both moved on from the job, together we keep in contact with some of the clients and a few will be attending the wedding!

Just how long has it been?

We have known each other for four years and have been dating for three years (just had our anniversary on Jan 1st.)

The proposal through his eyes

Red Roses and White Snow. That soft image was stuck In my head the winter I proposed to Shauna.

Almost like a miracle, at the perfect time and on the perfect day, the heavens opened up and beautiful Boulder, Colorado was dusted with fresh powder. There is a place near Chitaqua Park with a null that overlooks the city. On the top of the hill there is a stone bench and a single tree. I had been going to this spot since high school and would often retreat there to ponder the world with my friends. I remember telling them that this would be the perfect place to get engaged…and that day had finally arrived.

Of course, I couldn’t do it alone. My brother was my wing man through all of the planning and had woken up early that morning to prepare the spot with roses. After Shauna found my note saying, “You are invited to a special snowy breakfast, so bring your snow boots and dress warm because it’s cold outside”, she eagerly got into the car looking forward to pancakes. But little did she know we were arriving at a trail head for a different surprise. It was there where she noticed the single rose that my brother had stuck in the snow under the trail sign. After plucking up the rose, Shauna agreed to travel up the hill through the deep powder to see what was ahead. Once we reached the crest of the hill, the path continued with roses guiding the way to the bench where hundreds of rose petals were scattered in the snow.

It was there that I asked Shauna Marie to marry me. We looked over the city getting beautifully dusted with snow and I told her I wanted to spend all of our beautiful days together. To make the moment more magical, my brother had taken photos of the whole event.

Then, the three of us ended up going to our special snow breakfast to celebrate.

What makes the Gatehouse perfect for you?

We wanted a backyard/home feel for our vintage style reception. We were not sure where to begin and then a friend told us about a wedding she attended at the Dove House and encouraged us to check it out. We made an appointment for a tour of the Lionsgate Center (the first place we visited) and fell in love with the whole place, the Gate House in particular. We loved the garden with big trees and the patio and of course the fountain outside. Inside the house, we thought the stained glass and wood work was the perfect warming feel that we were looking for. We booked it and decided we did not need to look anywhere else!

Plan your wedding on a budget!

Planning a wedding can be one of the most expensive things you do in your whole life. So, how do you do it on a budget? Well, you are asking the right people! We here at the Lionsgate Center have been around for 23 years and find it almost like a tough sudoku to work with small budgets. We have become pros at it!

The first good thing to figure out BEFORE you go look at all the pretty, glittery and shiny things is to set your budget. Have you seen “Say yes to the dress”? God forbid you fall in love with something you can’t afford. Debt is no way to start your life off with the man (or woman) of your dreams! So sit down together and be realistic with yourselves.

Next, while you are sitting in the same room together, make a list of all the things a wedding entails (i.e. caterer, photographer, cake, etc.) and put them in order so what matters most to you is on top. Now, take a good look at that list. What is on bottom? Is it something that you can cut out completely? If not, try finding cheaper ways around it! But, just incase google hasn’t been helpful to you, I also will start a list of ways to help reduce cost! Like I said, we’ve done this for a long time!

1. Ditch the Dress cost

Image

Not totally sure what you are going to do with the dress after your big day? Have your heart set on a Pnina but can’t afford it? Then rent it or buy it pre-owned! There are some great sites out there to get designer dresses for less than half the price!

2. Cut the Cake

Image

for just the two of you that is! You could easily save if you purchased a two tiered cake for just you two to cut and have a sheet cake hiding in back for everyone else! It taste the same and you still have the prettyness of the tiered cake. Another small tip to save some moolah is to use fresh flowers for your cake instead of sugar. Sugar flowers are very time consuming and therefore cost more!

3. Flourish with in season Flowers

Image

This one says it all. You will get prettier flowers AND save on cost if you find out what is in season and stick to that.

4. Fake the Favors

How many weddings have you been to where the favor was something that you TOTALLY wanted and actually remembered to take home? Point made. Most people will forget your favor on the table at the end of the night anyway. I know I am a happy camper if I get some food and maybe a drink!

5. Crop out the costly photographers

Photographers can be one of the biggest costs in a budget and there are so many other options. In this day and age you could make a cute sign and ask your guests to take pictures for you! If that is just not an option there is a great site called www.yellowpaddlephotography.com that is newer and less experienced photographers that don’t have the price tag you would normally see.

6. Demand Drop-Off

If the facility that you have booked allows drop-off catering this is a great way to go. Have your favorite restaurants (think Rodizio Grill, Carrabba’s, or even Chipotle!) drop-off food and then you can usually hire an event staff (Lionsgate has an on-site staff) for considerably less dough.

7. Decide for a different Date

Image

Most facilities, photographers, DJ’s and even officiants will charge you more for “In season” months as well as weekend days. Believe it or not, people will still show up for your wedding if it is on a Thursday! Plus, then you have all weekend to spend time with that out of town family!! You could easily save thousands if you decided for a winter wedding.

Well, I hope that helps a little bit! Now, get planning!
