The history of Colorado’s Liongate Center

The Lionsgate Center has two facilities that both have amazing histories. Both places began as houses and the current owners are constantly adding and improving the grounds. Many of the defining features of The Lionsgate Center have a separate history themselves. With all the stories and tales I just couldn’t pass up writing a blog about it!

The Dove House

The Dove House was built in 1927 for Miss R.A. Dove and it is a rather scandalous story!

Once upon a time in a far away land, aka New York, there was a girl in love. Dove came from a long line of money and a very prestigious family but Dove had fallen for the butler and just couldn’t keep away. Dove was soon expecting a baby. The family was astonished and ashamed and just wouldn’t have anything to do with it! So they built her a house in the middle of nowhere, Colorado for her to move and raise the baby. What a punishment huh?

We have a beautiful yellow rose bush on the fence near hwy 287 (used to be the driveway) that Dove herself had brought with her from NY. It still blooms to this day and has been here for over 80 years!Screen Shot 2013-04-04 at 3.42.47 PM

The Bar

Eventually the events held at the Dove House outgrew it’s room and we had to add on. We tore down the garage and turned it into a bar. It is now home to an old New York bar that was originally from the Hampton Hotel in Albany. The dome stain-glass that you see when you look up is also from New York. It originated on a boat ride in Coney Island. Notice a NY theme?

The Phone booth

Who doesn’t want to jump inside this bright red booth for a photo shoot? Before you go jumping in, don’t you want to know where it has been?! This phone booth isn’t just any ordinary phone booth. It is the largest model that England ever built and only 200 were produced. The rarity comes from there only being 4 in private hands. We know of two people for sure that own this model, us and Madonna! Madonna bought one of the 4 for her New York apartment that she later turned into a fish tank. How about that for awesomeness in your wedding photos?!

The Gatehouse

The Gatehouse and surrounding barns were built in 1910. The original house is what we now call the “East Room”. The porch and front yard are all original. Everything else is newly built for events. It was originally a dairy farm, hence the barns and silo! This cute little old house doesn’t have much more history on the original grounds but the fun stories come from the pieces the owners used to make it what it is today.

The Stair Case

The grand stair case that is all carved wood came from a mansion in Denver. It’s beauty caught the eye of the owners at an auction and forced them to redesign the add on. Marie (the owner) called up her architect that moment and told him to add on a second level…they just bought a stair case!

The Stained Glass

The unbelievable sight of the massive stained glass has taken the breath from many of people. From pictures to in person, people just can’t get enough of it. It’s beauty, being over 130 years old, came straight from France. The center two panels were originally doors and the 4 largest panels were added later in the 1920’s. The gorgeous scenery of flowers and birds has one small frog in the left corner that is a cute hidden gem. Next time you see the window, try to find the frog!

The other miscellaneous stained glass including the peacock and arched windows on the north side are also from France. The arched pieces are the oldest at about 150 years old. When the owners had bought them originally they were covered in sticky tar from all the years of coal burning stoves. They had to have them professionally cleaned with acid. They turned out gorgeously!

The Entrance

Have you walked up to the front and yanked on the massive door? Well, you just touched a gem from Argentina! The door and both the side lights were on a mansion in Argentina and give the feel of royalty.

The wood work

Lining the walls in the Gatehouse ballroom is stunning wood work that included an amazing fireplace and server. These are all panels from a library in Germany. My favorite part? The seemingly “secret” door under neath the copper bar. The owners purchased this unique find and used every piece!

Upcoming wedding at The Lionsgate Center: Rachelle & Nick

Introducing the lovely couple: Rachelle & NickIMG_0435c (1)

Rachelle and Nick will make it official on April 27th, 2013.

Where did it start?

Nick and I met at a church event when we were in high school and became good friends. We attended the same university for a semester before he left to serve an LDS mission in Paraguay. When he came home, we spent a lot of time together and started dating!

How long have you been together?

We’ve know each other since the summer of 2007, so about 6 years. We have been dating for 8 months.

The proposal:

Nick’s proposal was very sweet. Our first day back from college for Thanksgiving break, we went to the Boulder Dinner Theatre with his mom and sister. I had no idea that my parents, his dad, brother, and cousin were all in the lobby as well. We ate our meal and 5 minutes before the show started, I decided to use the restroom really quick, which unfortunately is connected to the lobby! Luckily, I didn’t see my family and Nick was able to get them out before I came back! I thought the show was starting when one of the actors got on stage as asked Nick to come up. His sister looked at me to see my reaction, but I still had no idea! I quickly realized what was going on when he got up and asked me to go with him. Everyone was “awwwwing,” Nick proposed, and I said yes!  I was so nervous that I gave him my right hand when he went to put the ring on! I’m glad that both of our families got to be there; it was a perfect night!

Why the Gatehouse?

I have attended a few weddings that were held at the Lionsgate Center and loved its charm! We picked the Gatehouse because I love the “ball room” layout, especially since we hope to have lots of dancing at our reception. I have also heard great things about the staff! We wanted a place that would look beautiful but also provide a stress-free day and the Gatehouse has that :).

Upcoming Colorado Wedding at The Lionsgate Center: Duane & Lindsey

Introducing the beautiful Lindsey and Duane

hake_ottema_high-0019 hake_ottema_high-0025

Lindsey and Duane will be tying the knot on June 28th 2013!

Where did it all begin?

“Duane and I met at the hospital that we both currently work at.  I was starting my senior practicum of nursing school in the ICU.  I met Duane my first night while waiting for an open heart patient to return from the operating room.  A group of us were talking about scuba diving while we waited; a hobby Duane and I both have in common.  My preceptor at the time told Duane that when you dive you get to meet pretty girls.  Her sly way of trying to initiate something between the two of us.  Duane and I started of meeting and exchanging small talk that first night.  Following that he seemed to avoid me like the plague.  I had heard from fellow co-workers he wanted to ask me out but never did.  He was being a gentleman and wanted to respect that I was there to learn not to date.  A couple weeks later I finally took it upon myself to call Duane while at work to give him my number since he had yet to ask for it.  A move that embarrassed him and as I am told made him turn bright red in one of his patients rooms.  That night Duane made his way to see me and officially asked for my number.  We went on a few lunch dates following that and then eventually had our official first date.  One that I couldn’t have imagined to go better:  Catch in the park, Cold Stone ice cream, Wii bowling, sushi dinner, and dancing.  A perfect beginning to our story.”

Time well spent

“We have known each other for just under 2 years (about a year and 8 months).  We have been dating for just over a year and a half. ”

Tell us how he proposed!

“We were spending the weekend in Newcastle, Wyoming at his parent’s house.  Duane had planned to take me to Spearfish Canyon, South Dakota to see the waterfalls even though I was feeling sick.  The first stop was Roughlock Falls.  While walking down the trail we actually came across a small wedding ceremony; a site that was fitting considering the events that were to follow.  We continued along the trail to the bottom of the falls.  While enjoying the beautiful site Duane surprised me by getting down on one knee and asking me to marry him.  My was response was “Are you serious?”To which Duane replied “I’m on one knee with a ring… I am pretty serious.”  The obvioius answer was yes.  We celebrated alone for a few moments in front of the falls then made our way back up the trail.  The rest of the day was spent enjoying lunch and site seeing in Spearfish and then making our was back to Newcastle to share the news with family and friends.”

Why did you decide on the Dove House?

“When trying to find a venue we wanted to pick a place that took a lot of the pressure off of us as far as planning and finding vendors.  Lionsgate has definitely accomplished that for us thus far.  The planning process has been really enjoyable and stress free.  We chose the Dove House specifically because we loved the unique, vintage feel of the layout; an area that is cozy yet accommodates a large group of people.  We did not want the typical ballroom type reception.  We are also big dancers and having a designated dance area was definitely a plus for us.  Having a space that also offers and outdoor ceremony site and indoor reception in one location was a plus with all the out of town guests that will be coming.  I am incredibly excited for the big day and can’t wait to see how everything turns out.”

Sarah Jane & Paul – Winter wedding at The Lionsgate Center – Gatehouse

Sarah Jane & Paul got married on a snowy, December day. Unlike many people, they had 2 receptions with us here at The Lionsgate Center. Only people as sweet as SJ & Paul could know 600 people to celebrate with, therefore they had to separate the fun into two nights. But let me tell you, it was two nights to remember!

The ceremony started at a place near and dear to the couple – their church. The girls got final touches done in a cozy room while the boys put on jackets on the opposite side.

The “you may kiss the bride” just happened to be the cutest I’ve ever seen. 5′ 2″ Sarah Jane had a special stool to stand on to kiss 6′ 4″ Paul.

After they made it official, they had a classic ride waiting for them to take them to their reception at The Lionsgate Center – Gatehouse.

Country Charm in the City – Invite roosters and chickens to your Colorado wedding.

These feathered friends of ours live on our Dove House property and roam freely on the week days. You can choose to invite the birds to your wedding or we can keep them cooped up – your choice! Our beautiful chickens and roosters certainly add a little “pazazz” at an event! They give guests something fun to look at, and it’s quite a delight to hear them cluck and crow.

A touch of the UK at a Colorado wedding venue – Creative Wedding Ideas.

We are proud of our vintage red telephone booth that came to us straight from England.

A touch of British glamour at the Lionsgate Center.

Perhaps Queen Elizabeth used it once upon a time! I won’t get into the history of the piece but if  you care to enlighten yourself, Wikipedia has a wealth of information here!

Although it’s only a prop now, people made phone calls from our booth once upon a time.

Here’s a fun wedding idea that would be a perfect fit with our phone booth at the Dove House:

We all know that Superman is no stranger to phone booths – with a quick whirl inside, Clark Kent transforms into the ultimate hero! I think all Grooms should feel like Superman on their special day – so guys, take your wedding to the next level and wear a Superman shirt under your tux! And have your groomsmen join in on the fun.. guys, you better hurry and call dibs on your favorite hero!

The bride and her bridesmaids really scored big with their super hero guys!

Other fun ideas:

Grooms – play sardines with your groomsmen!

Get goofy!
